James Arkin

James Arkin, of Columbus, Ohio, is a junior working on the education beat for Medill News Service. A journalism and political science double major at Northwestern University, James has interned at Suburban News Publications in Columbus and worked as writer for Northwestern’s Scout.com affiliate. He has also directed and done color commentary for live sports broadcasts for the Big Ten Network and produced Northwestern News Network’s weekly sports broadcast. Ed DeMaria

Ed Demaria is a politics beat reporter for the Medill News Service and is majoring in broadcast journalism and political science at Northwestern University. He has interned at 48 Hours Mystery, where he wrote for their Crimesider blog. He has also produced, anchored and reported for the Northwestern News Network. Kit Fox

Kit Fox is a Northwestern University sophomore majoring in journalism. He is reporting on health and science for the Medill News Service website MedillontheHill.net. Last quarter, Kit braved the early mornings to intern at Good Day Chicago, Fox Chicago’s morning show. In the past, he has been the assistant sports editor for North by Northwestern and a freelance reporter for patch.com. Hailing from Highlands Ranch, Colo., Kit enjoys running and the Denver Broncos.


Mattias Gugel

Mattias Gugel is a Northwestern University sophomore who covers business for Medillonthehill.net. He hails from the “Bratwurst Capital of the World,” Sheboygan, Wis. The Sheboygan Lutheran High School alumnus is active in Sheboygan-area Lutheran churches as a substitute organist and as a multimedia volunteer for Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School. Ben Kamisar

Ben Kamisar, a journalism and political science major at Northwestern University, is the business beat reporter for Medill News Service. He has contributed to the Big Ten Network and Northwestern News Network, and founded Central Street Beat, a Northwestern sports blog. Last year, he worked in the district office of Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., as a constituent advocacy intern focusing mainly on immigration issues and foreclosure assistance. He is an ardent Minnesota Vikings fan. (@bkamisar)


Chris Kirk

Chris Kirk is a Northwestern University senior who covers
environmental and energy politics in Washington for Medill News Service. He grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and is studying journalism and political science. He was a news intern for Evanston Now, helped develop new hyperlocal news products at Yahoo and built interactives at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Shirley Li

Shirley Li is a junior studying magazine journalism and French at Northwestern University. She interned in China, studied abroad in France and worked for Patch.com last summer as well as InsideCounsel Magazine last fall. She is editor-in-chief of NU Asian Magazine and writes for North by Northwestern. Safiya Merchant

Safiya is a sophomore in the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, majoring in international studies along with journalism. A Chicago native, she aspires to become a foreign correspondent, investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker. This quarter, she covers education for Medill News Service. Last quarter, she was the deputy campus desk editor for The Daily Northwestern. She has previously interned for Medill’s Watchdog/Accountability Journalism Initiative. She hopes to use her career to expose human rights violations and social justice issues throughout the world.


Rachel Morello

Rachel Morello, a Medill sophomore at Northwestern University, is pursuing a degree in broadcast journalism, in addition to a certificate in integrated marketing communications. She has written for the weekly culture publication The Current, and she contributes to the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, serving as publicity co-chair. She has participated in a number of internships and shadow opportunities in journalism, including the past summer with Lake Country Publications in Hartland, Wis. Rebecca Nelson

Rebecca Nelson, a Northwestern University student who covers politics in Washington, is a Seattle native who is studying journalism and religion. Although her concentration is magazine, she also has a passion for radio, and interned at WGN Radio News last summer. She hopes to work in social justice reporting. Megan Neunan

Megan Neunan, a Northwestern University journalism student, is reporting for Medillonthehill.net with a focus on education. She spent the summer interning for the Army News Service in Arlington, Va. and taking night courses in government and economics at Georgetown University. Edwin Rios

Edwin Rios, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., is a national security beat reporter for Medill News Service. He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in magazine journalism and psychology at Northwestern University. He has previously worked for the New York Daily News and Northwestern Magazine. He has also served as a managing editor and interactive producer for North by Northwestern, and currently serves as vice president at Northwestern’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He was a national finalist in Feature Writing for the SPJ’s Mark of Excellence Award in 2010 for his piece, Hank Skinner’s last fight.  (@onestoryglory)

Ariel Rothfield is studying journalism and history at Northwestern University, with a concentration in the Middle East. Jaclyn Skurie is a sophomore at Northwestern University studying journalism and international studies, with a concentration in the Middle East. Patrick Svitek is a national security reporter for Medill News Service and a sophomore studying journalism and political science at Northwestern University. He most recently interned at his hometown paper, The (Fort Wayne, Ind.) Journal Gazette, as part of the Hoosier Scholastic Press Association’s Eugene S. Pulliam Internship Program. His work has also appeared in The Bluffton (Ind.) News-Banner, Morton Grove Patch, North by Northwestern and the Daily Northwestern, where he served as the city news desk editor in the fall. Northwestern University junior David Uberti is a politics and national security reporter for Medill News Service.
